We're Moving! - Adventist Community Services Relocates to Carnegie
Andrew Clark ~ Executive Director, Adventist Community Services
It truly seems like yesterday when Adventist Community Services-Disaster Response was requested by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to come to Southern Allegheny County to respond to Hurricane Ivan. Although our disaster response of Commodity Collection, organization, and redistribution was expected to be 30 to 90 days, I suppose sometimes there are things much bigger than our expectations.
Almost two years later, we have provided direct service to nearly 1000 households expanding our traditional Commodity distribution into home repairs, post traumatic counseling, Eviction Prevention and Utility assistance funding, even medical bi-lingual translation for patients and community flower planting and park beautification projects. An overwhelming majority of our cases have been in the area code 15106, the worst hit by Ivan in the immediate Greater Pittsburgh Area. When we realized we were staying more than 90 days and decided to move to the area, we chose to move into Carnegie, the borough in which we have the most clients. Although our operation has been in Bridgeville where the County helped us set up shop, we wanted to live among our hurting clients become friends.
Now, upon the urging of our community partners, clients, colleagues, and friends, we are officially re-locating to Carnegie! Adventist Community Services-Greater Pittsburgh is moving to 40 East Main Street, Downtown Carnegie. We will be opening a used book store and Computer room, fully equipped with Internet right on Main street. 100% of the profits from this business will go into our continued Community enrichment and revitalization programs such as home repairs and beautification projects. Although we will need to close down our direct services to clients for a time as we shut our doors at the Great Southern Shopping Center in Bridgeville, we hope it is realized that when we re-open in Carnegie we will now be able to move forward growing stronger roots and pressing on to “Be the Change We Want to See in Our Community”!
